NBN 2000 (Hyperfast) connections
Some time ago I took advantage of NBN Australia's free upgrade moving the residence off the FTTN to FTTP technology.
I have noticed in the last few months that this is now hitting speeds with those adverstised by the ISP provider. Even on weekends it holds it own very well and reliability is awesome.
However, I have 4 gamers in the house, steaming services in use, and although I have changed out the router with a enterprise level solution, it is not uncommon now for the pipe to hit 100% and the QoS rules start getting a workout.
So what is NBN 2000.
The Analogy
This will help explain to you how it works, and why I looked at it.
1. Speed (the flow rate)
Think of your internet connection as a pipe running from Telstra's network into your house. The speed is how fast water can physically flow through that pipe — like, how many litres per second it's capable of pushing through.
Your NBN 1000/100 plan means:
- The download pipe (water coming into your house) is rated for up to 1000 Mbps, but in real life yours actually flows at about 920 Mbps flat out.
- The upload pipe (water going out of your house) is rated for 100 Mbps, realistically running at about 94 Mbps flat out.
Notice these are two separate pipes — a big fat one for stuff coming in (streaming Netflix, downloading games) and a much skinnier one for stuff going out (uploading a video, sending a big email). That's why download is way faster than upload — it's just a bigger pipe.
The speed of the pipe doesn't change depending on what's using it. Whether one device is using it or ten, the pipe is still only physically capable of that same max flow rate. It's like the diameter of a garden hose — that's fixed, not something that changes because you're watering more of the garden at once.
2. Utilisation (how much of the pipe is being used right now)
Utilisation is a completely different measurement — it's not about how big the pipe is, it's about how much of that pipe's capacity is currently full of water at this exact moment.
So imagine the pipe again:
- If nobody in the house is using the internet, the pipe is basically empty — that's low utilisation.
- If everyone's home and your sons are downloading huge game updates, simply playing games, your daughter is streaming a 4K show, and someone's on a video call — all that water trying to flow through the pipe at once adds up.
- When the total amount of water trying to flow through equals the maximum the pipe can physically carry, you've hit 100% utilisation — the pipe is completely full, running flat out.
Speed is the size/capacity of the pipe (fixed), utilisation is how much of that capacity is being used right now (changes constantly).
So when you say your download hits 100% utilisation — that means at that moment, all your devices combined are demanding enough water to completely fill that ~920 Mbps pipe. There's no more room; the pipe's maxed out. If something else tries to squeeze through, it has to wait its turn (which is where things start to feel laggy or buffer-y).
Your upload sitting around 75% means most of that skinnier pipe is in use, but there's still a bit of spare room before it's completely full.
3. What happens if you upgrade to 2000/500
Upgrading the plan is like Telstra coming in and literally swapping out your pipes for bigger ones. The maximum flow rate goes up — but nothing else about how water moves through your house changes on its own.
- Download pipe: goes from a real-world ~920 Mbps up to a real-world ~1800-1900ish Mbps (same rough ~92-95% of the advertised speed you're seeing now, plan upgrades don't usually change that ratio).
- Upload pipe: goes from ~94 Mbps up to roughly ~470-480 Mbps, similarly scaled.
So what actually changes for your household?
- The pipe is now way bigger, but your family's total water demand hasn't changed. If everyone's combined "thirst" was maxing out the old 920 Mbps pipe, that same amount of water now only fills a fraction of the new 1900 Mbps pipe. So your download utilisation would drop from 100% down to somewhere around 45-50%, because the same demand is now spread across double the capacity.
- Same idea on upload — the same amount of outgoing traffic that was 75% full on a 94 Mbps pipe becomes about 15% full on a ~475 Mbps pipe.
- The lag/buffering you get from hitting 100% utilisation goes away — because there's now plenty of spare pipe capacity, even at your peak usage times. Everyone can be downloading/streaming/calling at once and there's still room to spare.
- The only way you'd hit 100% again is if your household's actual demand grew to match the new bigger pipe — e.g., more devices, more 4K streams, bigger game downloads, or something like a NAS/cloud backup constantly chewing through upload.
One thing worth flagging: a bigger pipe only helps if the bottleneck is actually the pipe. If something inside the house — like your UDM SE's routing/NAT throughput, WiFi congestion, or a device's own NIC — is the real limit, upgrading the plan won't fix that; it just moves the bottleneck further downstream, from the Telstra pipe to your own gear.
I'm not explaining that last paragraph as it would confuse you. Lets just say that throughput of the router needs to be able to cope with the water in the pipe. This is effected by its processor, RAM, IDS/IPS functionality and is normally documented. An all in one router provided by an ISP is normally not great for this. Your network is also effected by its design. Is everything connected via wireless and at what speed. Are you using hardwired cabling, also at what speed, etc... complicated.
The NBN 2000 Backbone
Australia's fastest residential NBN tier has been live for a year. Australia's biggest telco still isn't selling it. Here's what's actually going on, and what the alternatives look like.
NBN Co switched on its "Hyperfast" NBN 2000 wholesale tier on 14 September 2025, offering theoretical download speeds of up to 2000 Mbps (2 Gbps) to homes on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). A year on, as of September 2026, Telstra's own plan-selection page still tops out at Ultrafast nbn®1000 — 1000/50 Mbps, advertised at $139/month with a typical evening download speed of 875 Mbps (I get more than that). There's no NBN 2000 option in Telstra's residential nbn plan lineup at all.
If you specifically want a 2 Gbps home connection, you currently need to go elsewhere. A handful of smaller and mid-sized retailers — Aussie Broadband, Superloop, Leaptel, Launtel, Neptune and a few others — have all launched NBN 2000 plans since the tier went live. This post runs through what NBN 2000 actually is, why Telstra's absence from that list matters (and doesn't), who's currently selling it, and what the NTD/router upgrade process looks like if you decide to move.
What NBN 2000 actually is
NBN 2000, branded "Hyperfast" by NBN Co, is a wholesale speed tier introduced as part of the company's broader "Accelerate" speed-upgrade program in September 2025. Alongside it, NBN Co also lifted the ceiling on its other high-speed tiers at no extra wholesale cost to retailers:
- Home Fast (previously NBN 100) → NBN 500 (500/50 Mbps)
- Home Superfast (previously NBN 250) → NBN 750 (750/50 Mbps)
- Home Ultrafast (NBN 1000) → upload lifted to 1000/100 Mbps
- New tier: NBN 2000 "Hyperfast" → up to 2000 Mbps down
Upload speed on NBN 2000 depends on connection type: FTTP customers can get up to 200 Mbps (500 Mbps on business-grade variants), while HFC connections top out at 100 Mbps upload. As of the July 2026 wholesale pricing update, NBN Co charges retailers around $119/month for the NBN 2000 tier — up from $115, as part of an across-the-board wholesale price rise that hit every speed tier.
Two important caveats worth being upfront about:
- FTTP and HFC only. If you're on Fibre to the Node, Fibre to the Curb, Fixed Wireless or satellite, NBN 2000 isn't available to you directly — though FTTN/FTTC premises in NBN Co's fibre upgrade footprint can often trigger a free upgrade to FTTP by ordering an eligible high-speed plan.
- Real-world speeds won't hit 2000 Mbps. As with every NBN tier, 2000 Mbps is the theoretical ceiling, not a guaranteed or even typical result. Early "typical evening speed" figures from retailers who publish them sit in the 1600–1800 Mbps range — still an enormous jump over NBN 1000, just not the round number on the box.
Telstra's current top tier — and the gap
Telstra's own plan-selection page (telstra.com.au/internet/nbn), checked directly for this piece, lists five nbn plan bands for residential customers:

There is no sixth tier. Ultrafast nbn®1000 is, as of this writing, the fastest plan Telstra sells to residential customers — a full speed tier behind what NBN Co has had available for a year.
Why hasn't Telstra launched it? This is the part worth being honest about the evidence for. I haven't found any on-the-record statement from Telstra explaining the omission — no press release, blog post, or spokesperson quote addressing it directly. The most commonly cited explanation online is a piece of forum speculation from Reddit's r/nbn community, paraphrased as: 2 Gbps plans are still a fairly niche market, so Telstra hasn't prioritised building and marketing a plan around the tier yet. That's a plausible read given how few retailers have bothered (independent comparison sites had only 9 of roughly 44 tracked providers offering NBN 2000 as of mid-2026), but it's an anonymous forum poster's theory, not a confirmed corporate rationale — treat it as informed speculation, not fact. It's also worth noting Telstra's enterprise/business division sells dedicated multi-gigabit Ethernet products to commercial customers on entirely separate infrastructure and pricing — that's a different product category from residential NBN retail and isn't really "NBN 2000 in disguise."
Who actually sells NBN 2000 right now
Pricing below reflects each provider's own site or independent comparison data at the time of research (mid-to-late 2026 where available) — check directly before signing up, as retail broadband pricing moves often.

A couple of things stand out. First, Launtel's pricing model is genuinely unusual and worth flagging on its own merits: it bills by the day and lets you toggle your own speed tier up or down (their words: "#CrankIT"), so you could run NBN 100 most of the year and switch to 2000/500 for the week you're moving a media library or hosting a LAN party, then drop back down — no lock-in, no plan-change fee. Second, Neptune's pricing sits mid-pack for a plan that (per their own documentation) comes with a genuinely well-explained upgrade path, which matters more than it sounds for this particular tier.
What the switch actually involves
This is the part that tends to get glossed over in "here's a cheap 2Gbps plan" comparison articles: you can't just log in and flick a switch. Getting an existing FTTP or HFC service up to NBN 2000 needs new hardware at both the NBN network boundary and inside your house. Neptune's own support documentation lays this out clearly and it's broadly representative of what any retailer selling the tier will require:
- FTTP connections need a new-generation, multi-port Network Termination Device (NTD). This requires an NBN technician appointment, typically 2–3 weeks lead time. Your service is provisioned on 1000/100 in the interim and the 2000/x plan kicks in automatically once the new NTD is commissioned.
- HFC connections get a self-install NTD kit shipped out — no technician visit needed for most premises — with a typical lead time of 1–2 weeks.
- Router/CPE requirements: your router needs a 2.5 Gbps (or faster) WAN port to actually pass through the higher speed. A router capped at a 1 Gbps WAN port will bottleneck the connection regardless of what NBN Co and your retailer are delivering — this is worth checking before you order, since it's an easy thing to overlook if you're reusing existing gear.
- No short trials. At least with Neptune, the standard 5-day trial period isn't offered on 2000/x plans, given the hardware provisioning involved — so it's more of a commitment to test than a lower-tier plan swap would be.
- Some retailers (Neptune among them) waive the multi-port NTD upgrade fee entirely if you take the top-end 2000/500 business-grade plan, or if you already have multiple services running through an existing four-port NTD.
Practically: budget several weeks between ordering and actually seeing 2 Gbps at your router, and check your existing router's WAN port spec before you commit to a plan upgrade — it's the single most common way people end up disappointed after doing everything else right.
Is it worth it?
That's a genuinely "it depends" answer and not one this article is trying to settle for you. For most households, even a busy one with several people streaming 4K simultaneously plus some gaming and video calls, NBN 1000 (or even 500) comfortably covers it, and the price step up to NBN 2000 is significant — roughly $50–80/month more than an NBN 1000 plan across the providers above. Where it starts to make sense is specific, heavy use cases: multi-TB file transfers, professional content upload/download workflows, households running a lot of concurrent 4K/8K streams plus large downloads, or homelab-adjacent use cases like frequent large backups to/from cloud storage. If none of that describes your household, NBN 1000 — which Telstra, among plenty of others, does sell — is still a very fast connection for the money.

So there you have it. Possible just not with Telsta Australia.
Cost - major increase.
So is it worth it - well that depends on your disposable income, and use case.
Now I understand why my NTD only has 1Gbps ports - 4 of them.
It does however raise questions on my NTD after researching the above.
Running speed tests only tells you half the story.
My answer is currently no.
