NBN Australia - FTTP

I took advantage of the free upgrade to optic fiber as advised by my ISP
Was it worth it - well I am still debating that one. I didn't change my plan although we had topped out our FTTN connection, we couldn't go any faster if we tried.
The FTTP connection is capable of staggering more speed on the downside and roughly quadruple on the up.
But, I am somewhat annoyed that although the Alcatel-Lucent G-240G-P NTD has four ports in it (of which we are using one) and the Telstra Smartrouter version 3 has been put back in its box (I don't need it - my UDM router can talk directly with the NBN - albeit with a little tinkering) the Alcatel-Lucent G-240G-P is limited to 1 Gb connections on the RJ45 ports and there are no optic fiber ports even though the technician fitted it right behind the TV cabinet where everything else is.
The NBN technician by the way was a bloody good bloke. Hopefully he goes to your house and does the upgrade.
I mean the optic fiber cable is right bloody there, and the UDM has 2.5, 5 and 10 Gb WAN ports right there.
Okay, free is free but what the hell.
You could have upgraded the Alcatel-Lucent G-240G-P to have at least 2.5 Gb port in it. I mean I looked it up. Nada.
But this line in the attached document is rather ambiguous
Architecture - Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON)
Best effort bandwidth (wholesale) - 1000Mbps/400Mbps
Business you get better on the up side but nope - 1000 Mbps on the down.

So basically - 1Gb is the best you can go. I see why there is no 2.5 Gb port.
The fact that every Australian taxpayer paid for this is well disappointing.
However, the ping rates are better, optic fiber is more reliable, and I need an UPS (power backup) and have got rid of the Telstra router that was bridged.
I have two fiber optic links now. The NBN and the Opticomm box that feeds my free TV signal into the house (yep, a private contractor fitted most of the suburb I live in with optic fiber). Yep everyone in the neighbourhood can watch free to air TV even if the sky is on fire.
So if you're thinking of upgrading your house network to better than 1Gb and your services are on the other side of the NTD you're wasting your money, (its called a bottle neck), like those ridiculously expensive stop lights on the on ramps of the freeway that nobody stops at.
Yep, little Johnny you're a legend mate. Flaming waste our money like hell you lot. But here we are.
